Our Visual Arts programme aims to empower museums and galleries across the Western Balkans to attract young audiences.

Primary activities include training and development, professional study exchange visits and sharing the UK’s knowledge in the visual arts and museums sector. These activites are usually complimented with an exhibition from the British Council Collection in collaboration with our partners to support skills and knowledge exchange.

In the past few years, representatives of museums from across the Western Balkans were trained by experts from the Tyne and Wear Museum, the National Museum of Scotland and the Design Museum in London. We have also hosted several world-renowned exhibitions in the region, including Damien Hirst’s New Religion in 2016, Grayson Perry’s The Vanity of Small Differences in 2017, the Perceptions exhibition tour between 2018 and 2019 and Brian Eno's 77 Million Paintings in 2018, many of which showcased the works of contemporary UK artists alongside artworks from the Western Balkans.
